What is the Tweel wheel? It is an airless tire to replace the current tires, check it out!

Today, we will discuss an invention beyond the airless tire bike and airless tire for the bicycle. Tweel is an imaginative airless tire developed for about 10 years by Michelin. Now, it is available in the USA.

The word Tweel comes from two English words: a tire (tire) and wheel. With a design reminiscent of motorcycle wheels, this technology aims to be much lighter and more economical.

Concept

The concept behind Michelin’ Tweel was to offer customers a tire that does not stick or does not burst. After many studies, the manufacturer produced the Tweel, which is now commercially available, thus, no longer being a prototype.

At the first time, Michelin presented it as a prototype at the Paris Motor Show in 2004 as a harbinger of a revolution in the automotive wheels. Indeed, this airless tire for the car is on sale in the US and has now a considerable division in its organic structure.

Construction of tire

From the solid centre, it is the deformable wheel where the rays are made of polyurethane, being light, resistant and with good property damping. Then it has the tread, the outer part of the wheel, which also works to assist in the damping. Saving rubber and air, we have a considerably lighter wheel than the current ones. So, logically it saves more fuel.

For the time being, it is to use with the UTV and off-road vehicles in the ATV line.

The structure of Tweel – An airless tire

The worst fault, also the most difficult to repair, is vibration. Walking slowly with the car, the Tweel behaves well. But, it can work well at the 80 km/h because the vibration increases too much after this speed limit.

Michelin Tweel is manufactured at the Piedmont facility in South Carolina (USA). The Tweel consists of a rigid hub attached to the tread band through deformable polyurethane beams, all working as a set.

Unlike conventional tires, the Tweel is an “open” tire running airless, which allows a definitive answer to borehole hazards during activities, in quarries, agricultural, construction and waste management.

“In the industry, there is a strong demand for solutions that contribute to improving safety and productivity. Serving our customers is the goal of our successful strategy, “says Michelin.

In an effort to reduce the time lost by repairing tire bores, many manufacturers were looking for an alternative to maintain traction, manoeuvrability or comfort.

Tweel has the following advantages:

  • No need to check air pressure;
  • Ease assembly;
  • Increase resistance to aggression;
  • Improve comfort and reduce operator fatigue;
  • Increase productivity and durability compared to a conventional tire.
Flaws in tweel tires

Two other important Tweel problems that still need to be solved are your heating and noise. In tests carried out on long trips at high speeds, technicians eventually noticed an over-normal heat generation. The old problem of high speed also ends up causing discomfort because of the excessive noise.

There is still a lot of study and investment ahead, but we can certainly say that Tweel is a great revolution for automotive tires that have been operating for over 100 years now.
